GDSA x NYC Info & Website

The GDSA x NYC trip mobile website is now launched! You will find all of the information that is in your pocket guides (which you will be receiving upon arrival), along with links to Google Maps locations to each of the firms we will be visiting. This can be found by visiting nyc.asugdsa.org. It works great on phones, and don’t worry, it works fine on computers too!

Also, we are selling shirts with the GDSA x NYC logo on them. If you bring us a shirt as well as $7, we’ll silkscreen the logo onto your t-shirt for you. If you don’t have a shirt, please specify your size and color and bring $25, we’ll go to American Apparel and buy one for you, and then print on it. Please pre-wash your shirt before bringing them to us. T-shirts and money should be brought up to the Junior Studio CDN355, and delivered to one of the four officers (Alex, Joseph, Monica, or Nicole). If you don’t have cash, that’s fine, we can swipe your credit card using a Square reader.

Lastly, there are three firm visits in which we could only bring a limited number of people to due to small office sizes. We have two visits scheduled at the same time for Tuesday, March 20th at 2:00pm. One of them will be going to Sterling Brands and the other will be going to the AIGA National Design Center. There are 21 available slots for Sterling, and 25 available slots for AIGA. Also, we have a visit on Thursday, March 22nd to Mucca Design. Unfortunately, we were not able to schedule a second visit. There are 18 slots available for Mucca.

A sign-up sheet for these firms will be posted outside the Junior Studio CDN355 on Wednesday, March 7th at 1:00pm. Sign-ups are first come first serve.

All of this information and more is available on the Official GDSA x NYC website. Please be checking your e-mail for any potential updates or important information.

We’re really excited to be enjoying the city with such great company, and are looking forward to having a blast with all of you.

Portfolio Night

Hey upperclassmen! We know you’re getting ready to apply for that summer internship or if you’re a senior: your first job as a professional. The AIGA Portfolio Night is the perfect way to get great feedback on your work to help you land the job you’re looking for. There will be a large group of local professionals on hand to critique student work from 7:00pm to 9:30pm tomorrow (Thursday, March 1st) in Red Square in Design North. Feel free to bring whatever you want to show! Keep in mind, if you’re going to be showing motion graphics, bring your computer… If you’ll be showing print work, it’s probably a good idea to bring some of your actual printed pieces. Freshman and sophomores are welcome to come as well.

Details are as follows:

When: Thursday March 1st from 7:00pm - 9:30pm! Where: Design North Red Square!

Two Great Events Happening This Week!

AIGA Arizona is putting on two fantastic design events this week at ASU.

First: “Tall Tales from a Large Man” with Draplin Design Co.

Aaron Draplin from Draplin Design Co. will be giving a lecture TOMORROW NIGHT (Thursday, Feb 9) at 7pm in Business Administration C wing, room 216. Just a regular guy with a trajectory a little dirtier than yours, his talk is open to all oncomers brave enough to show up. If you are a youngster, you may find yourself inspired to attack your design future in a different way. If you are established, you may just leave feeling grateful you don’t have anything to do with him. Hard to say. One night only, Phoenix! It’s FREE for AIGA Members AND Students ($5 refundable reservation required). Reserve your spot HERE. Also, Draplin will be holding a workshop in the Bridge of the design buildings from 11am - 2pm. Come bring work for him to critique, or just hang out and share ideas!

Second: “MoGraph 101” with Justin Katz from Flock of Pixels

Justin Katz – a local designer and owner of motion graphics firm Flock of Pixels – will be giving a lecture titled MoGraph 101 on Saturday, Feb 11 from 10am-12pm in CDN68. He’ll be discussing practices in effective motion graphic design, including the process he takes when planning and executing a new motion piece. It’s free for AIGA members and students ($5 refundable reservation required). Reserve your spot here!

If you’re not an AIGA member yet, student memberships are on sale again for $50! Visit www.AIGA.org to join.
